TMHS 94: Sugar Addiction Estrogen Dominance & The Hormone Reset Diet with Dr. Sara Gottfried

A statement that Dr. Sara Gottfried made at the end of this episode sent powerful chills right down my spine. She spoke to the powerful truth about a women’s work on this planet, and how important it is to get your body in balance. When you hear this statement, you will know it.

Leading up to that, we have one of the most valuable shows yet, with tips and insights about estrogen dominance (in men and women), sugar addiction, and how your gut microbiome is determining whether you are fit or fat. Dr. Gottfried is a Harvard and MIT trained physician who really knows her stuff. She diligently scoured through nearly one thousand research papers to create The Hormone Reset Diet so that people can take what works and discard the rest.

She concentrates everything down into a way that makes sense. It’s easy, doable, and (most importantly) it’s backed by hardcore science. She’s not tossing out ideas that may or may not work. She’s here to share with you strategies that are proven to be effective. All you need to do is listen in, apply some of the things you learn, and see the results for yourself.

In this episode you’ll discover:

  • Why so many people who focus on calories struggle to lose weight.
  • What the 7 hormones of metabolism are.
  • Why reseting estrogen is an important first step for both women AND men.
  • How estrogen dominance can lead to unwanted deposits of fat on your body.
  • Why conventionally raised beef is incredibly problematic for your health.
  • How dietary fiber helps eliminate estrogen from your system (this is critical!).
  • What your estrobolome is and how it shapes your health.
  • Why compartmentalizing your health is a huge problem.
  • Simple tips you can use to move your body more throughout the day.
  • What some of the underlying causes of sugar addiction are.
  • Why sugar substitutes may be even worse for you than sugar itself.
  • How the bacteria in your gut can determine whether you are overweight or not.

  1. Hi Shawn,

This is officially my first review of a podcast out of the several I have listened to for the last 3 years!

Why I NEED to write this is simple: I immediately quit my birth control pill after hearing Dr Sara talk about hormones. And because of that I just had my 3rd baby girl in October 2015! My husband and I thought we were done after daughter #2 but obviously we were not. Baby #3 was very much the start of something revolutionary for our family- 1) I dropped my antidepressant med after being on it for 10 years 2) last year while I was pregnant was the healthiest I have EVER eaten in my life and 3) we had our 3rd baby naturally AT HOME!

There was a lot of factors that determined our family’s change in health last year and your podcast was definitely one of the major ones. Thank you for all you do and keep inspiring and empowering people!

    God bless!

  2. Hello Shawn – in some last post, there used be transcripts of podcast which was very helpful as we can read that on our convieninet time.

But I saw you stopped them now.. If not an concern, I would love to have those transcripts again..

  3. This show was wonderful I can’t wait to share it with all my girlfriends. I just recently had my second baby who is almost 4 months old and my hormones are just crazy. One thing that I’ve noticed is I’m having a really difficult time losing weight this time (I am 35) and I recently introduced probiotics and probiotic rich food into my diet. Now she talked a lot about our microbiome. I would like to know more about that because ever since starting probiotics I’ve gained weight, I can’t handle sugar, and I am not talking bad sugar, I am talking about fruit sugar or honey and I’m hyper. Do you have any thoughts on this. I’ve always been a very lean, lean person, but I feel like probiotics and making me metabolize food in different ways and are hindering my weight loss efforts. Could this be affecting my hormone levels as well? I don’t eat red meat and I eat a lot of fiber. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. I plan on ordering the book today.

    1. Alison, first of all, thank you for being a mom. That’s it. Thank you. Wow, what could be a more valuable position than that?

As for the probiotic/weight problem, that’s a justified assessment, but highly unlikely to have that type of impact. I remember answering some questions you had a while back and seeing that lots and lots and lots of cardio was a big part of your life. I threw out some flags of caution because of what can happen once you hit the age mark that you’re at now. Yes, your hormones are different, and just having a new baby, plus not being able to keep up the pace of chronic cardio you were doing will be a little bit of a recipe for resistant weight gain. More cardio and trying to beat it off of your body is NOT the solution. You’ll just be running forever because you’ve trained your body to operate a certain way. You have to allow your body to change the way it operates in a state of normalcy.

This is not without a solution. But you have to understand that what got you here (with what you don’t want) will not get you where you want to go. You need to be more patient, gentle, and kind to your body. Go back and go over the bullet points/message that I sent you before. Everything will be more than alright. Just remember that you are beautiful regardless, and enjoy that new baby.

      With love,
      Shawn

  4. Hello Shawn,
This show was very informative and vital for me being in my 40’s and my hormones are definitely out of whack (diagnosis: premenopausal). I’m currently reading her first book but will get the latest one soon. Also missed seeing you and Jade in video format! Thanks again for always keeping us informed and providing awareness which is very important to making the right selections and being able to implement an effective regimen to obtain an ongoing healthy lifestyle. When I talk health and fitness with my daughter (29 years old), she always says with a smile “How did you get this information, Mom?” and before I can answer, she says “The Shawn Stevenson Model Health Show!” She sees me changing my lifestyle and the positive results which has her making changes now and asking for my advice. That touches me deeply as a parent. You are my health/fitness guru and if you were in my area (Maryland), I would acquire your services as a fitness trainer. I enjoy the way you and Jade keep bringing it with each show. My gratitude always!

    1. Annette, this just totally made my day. Thank you! So honored and happy that you are making me a part of your life. Promise to keep the good stuff coming (and more video! – Just working out the best formats right now, especially for out-of-studio guests… you know we’ve got to keep it top notch ;-)).
