TMHS 046: How To Improve Your Self-Esteem, Build Confidence, And Strengthen Your Body Image

In this episode of The Model Health Show we’re covering the important topic of body image and self-esteem. Recently there’s been alarming data revealed about body image and the media. We are trained, at an early age, to under-appreciate ourselves, and strive for a programmed belief of what perfection is.

Most people today struggle with body image issues. Yet, it’s something that’s hardly ever discussed because it’s so deeply ingrained in our culture to have them.

Today we’re going to shine a light on a major problem that’s at the core of eating disorders, depression, and numerous other issues affecting our health and happiness. By the end of the show, you’ll know exactly how to create a positive body image, and use it as a catalyst for a healthier, happier life.

In this episode you’ll discover:

  • How a video revealed that people view themselves as less attractive than they really are.
  • How magazines and popular media are tricking people into false expectations.
  • What important realization we need to have about uniqueness.
  • What “borrowed desires” are and what they do to us.
  • How we reaffirm our opinion of ourselves with our lifestyle choices (this is life-changing!)
  • The critical “check-in” you need to do with yourself when working towards a goal.
  • How our identity can make or break us.
  • Why your need to be aware of your BP (blueprint) vs. your LC (life conditions)
  • Whether or not men tend to struggle with body image issues.
  • The 6 tips to change your body image and strengthen the opinion of yourself.
  • Why envy and jealously depress your progress.
  • A powerful exercise to create a deeper appreciation of your body.
  • How receiving compliments has been distorted in our modern society.
  • Where our beliefs about beauty actually come from and how to change them.
  • What the ultimate gauge for measuring your progress is.

Wow, wow, wow! Some excellent things I needed to hear and work on with myself. Something deep you said early in the podcast: “We affirm our ideas of ourselves with the food we eat.” As I struggle to eat cleanly–not only the food itself but the amount of it a times–THAT is what I need to realize.
I am beautiful. I am loved and considered precious. I am uniquely gifted.
    Thank you, Shawn.

Thank you for this excellent message, Shawn.
It is full of jewels, but there are four major take-aways for me:

    1) “We affirm our ideas of ourselves with the food we eat.” Wow!
If I see myself as unfit, unworthy, unattractive, etc., I’m going to eat to sabotage myself (I do this!) and put up barricades because I don’t truly see myself as that fit, worthy, attractive person. So much in there that I need to look deep & specific on with myself. Fantastic. Thank you!

    2) Speak sweetly to myself.
I love the way you put that. “Sweetly” is exactly the right word I needed to picture this point. How many times this week…today…did I say to myself, “What’s wrong with me!?”
With years and years of self-imposed guilt for how I was living/eating and the damage I was doing to myself, and seeing myself as weak because I couldn’t get control of it–this is a very difficult habit to break.

    3) Say, “I love you” to myself.
Hmmm, ok, will work on that. I can see the potential healing of it.

    4) Acknowledging my uniqueness.
I’ve always been one of those people who figured that if I could do it, anybody could. But I do know several of my unique giftings (singer, teacher, funny, encouraging, loyal, etc.). And I have SURVIVED a lifetime as a morbidly obese woman who’s now a healthy woman and can share my journey to help others along their journey.

Grateful for you and your work, Shawn.
