TMHS 152: The Anatomy Of Success

When I was in college, there weren’t any classes on success. There wasn’t a Success 101 course. If there was, I would’ve been there.

There were a lot of classes on the fundamentals… math, science, writing, and even courses dedicated to our majors (like business, engineering, computer science, and health), but there wasn’t any classes that taught us how to put it all together. I’m charged to report that even the best colleges in the world fail to teach us how to actually be successful in our chosen field, let alone in life in general.

Right now it’s more important than ever to grab the study of success by the horns. Life, health, and happiness can quickly run away from you if you’re not fortunate enough to know what makes a successful life versus what allows us to just get by.

Recently, I felt that my formal education experience could lend a hand by giving a framework to discuss what success really looks like.

Anatomy is the study of structure or the internal workings of things. Today we’re going to be breaking down the anatomy of success and take a deep look at the internal workings of passion, commitment, and fulfillment.

Success isn’t merely a metaphysical thing. There are specific principles and insights that will make this the sweetest science you’ll ever learn. So, pull up to the blackboard, grab your notebook, and let the fun begin!

In this episode you’ll discover:

  • The #1 muscle you need to develop to create a successful life.

  1. I listened to this episode last night, after talking to my therapist about how next week, I want to discuss my lack of motivation/hustle. I know that I can be doing so much more with my life, but I just don’t seem to have the drive to do it! I needed to hear this podcast! I will likely listen to it again before my appointment next week, as well as the TedX talk and the episodes listed in the show notes. I even gave my therapist a link to this show. I also told her that she should subscribe to the podcast, because you provide great value with each episode.

  2. Shawn and Jade, this episode has come at exactly the right time. I am on the brink of making a very big life change and your assertion that not choosing to make a decision is in and of itself a choice actually made me pull over (I was driving at the time) because that is exactly what I have been doing for some time. I have been umming and ahhing over this decision for at least 12 months and while I made it prior to hearing this podcast, the coinciding of the two (weeks apart) was like a sign from the universe. Listening to this podcast has reminded me that while I have been a little lost in the wilderness, my life itself is in my hands. Thank you for your wisdom and compassion. I receive your advice with gratitude and wish you both all the best.

  3. Shawn & Jade, I’ve been obsessed with your show for several months now. You keep me company on my long (55 minute so it’s perfect) commute to and from work – I’ve binged on old episodes, and listen to the new ones as soon as they come out. When I hear one that really reaches me (like this one), I share it with my coaching team. I’d had a really crappy experience at the end of my work day, with a co-worker who I’ve been protecting, throwing me under the bus and taking credit for my work, when my work was actually to cover for his error – and was ANGRY. I was all stuck in my head about the situation, and what to do about it, and it was very unhealthy, as I was on my way to teach a horseback riding lesson to an eleven year old, and really needed to get into my happy place. And then I tuned in. I almost didn’t – I love your fitness and nutrition info, but that’s the meat of why I listen to you; my personal development, is usually in the form of books (just finished reading the Go-Giver – which may be why parts of this episode resonated with me so much). Your words, your lessons, turned my mind around – thank you! I’ll be listening to this one again, when I’m able to write some of your lessons down, because I NEED to make sure I remember them. Much gratitude for what you do, and how well you do it.

  4. I’m a big fan of the show but this episode touched me at my core. I’m at a pivotal stage in my life. I’m turning 60 years young next month and it is messing with my head. There are so many negative messages in society about women over 50 that it makes me sick to the stomach. I can’t quite figure out why people think that our lives are less valuable as we age or that we are less attractive or worthy. But I digress! I’ve been feeling stuck about making decisions related to my business and what I want for my life over the next 10 years. I even sent out a blog post to my community saying I’m considering quitting 🙁 but listening to this episode today has GIVEN ME LIFE! You mapped out the exact plan for me to follow to get my life back on track. I even sent the link to my 27 year old daughter and posted it on my FB page. Thank you for all you do. You and this podcast are truly a blessing in my life.

    1. Gail, you deserve nothing but the best. Thank you so much for sharing that and making us a part of your world. Sixty has NEVER looked as good as you’re going to make it. 😉
