TMHS 151: 4 Unusual Foods That Can Help Transform Your Body

Growing up I never really liked vegetables. As a matter of fact, I didn’t like very many foods at all outside of the staples of hamburgers, fish sticks, macaroni & cheese, and sandwiches. These things tasted great to my tiny palate, and set the template for my eating habits for years to come.

It surprises people when they hear that I didn’t eat my first salad until I was 25 years old. Yep, you heard that right. No green leaf doth pass my lips, and I loved thee not. But everything changed when I learned about the power food had to change my body, and there really was no looking back after that.

Since turning my health around in my early 20’s I’ve eaten more fun, exotic, and even unusual foods than you can shake a finger at. And what I’ve learned is that certain foods have actually been staples in the diets of our ancestors, but we have somehow lost sight of them in lieu of Pop Tarts and pizza.

Today’s powerhouse episode is a reintroduction to the classes of foods that all of us need to add into our diets on a regular basis. These 4 unusual foods will deliver your body more health and vitality than just about any other foods you can name. So, I pray thee enjoy the podcast and shareth with thine friends! And as Shakespeare would say today, “Let’s get it poppin’!”

In this episode you’ll discover:

  • Which foods are some of the only “wild foods” that people have access to today.
  • Which food is likely the highest source of potassium and an excellent free radical scavenger.
  • Where to find the highest source of bioavailable iodine.
  • Whether or not you should be concerned about eating sea veggies due to pollution.
  • Why simply eating local might not be enough in our world today.
  • Which gelatinous food can help your body maintain normal levels of antioxidants.
  • Why “essential sugars” need to be a part of your nutrition strategy.
  • What adaptogens are and why they’re so important.
  • How to add more foods like aloe vera and sea veggies into your diet.
  • What the major differences between flax and chia seeds are.
  • How to make sure that your flax and chia seeds don’t get rancid.
  • Why cooking certain foods (versus eating them raw) is a much safer way to eat them.
  • What the #1 antioxidant food in the world is (this may surprise you!).
  • Which foods have the most proven anti-cancer benefits.
  • Which category of foods are critical for healthy digestion and detoxification.

  1. Hi Shawn, heard you on the Rich Roll podcast and really liked your energy so I just started listening to your podcast too! You are very informative, speak intelligently but with added humor 🙂 and I really like how you cite studies. I am constantly looking to learn more about health and do my best to “model” good habits for my PE students and anyone else I meet. It’s so nice to hear people like you and Rich Roll on a constant basis reaffirming the truth, because it is tough out there! Lots of resistance, excuses, and ignorance surrounding the health field. Thanks so much for what you do!!!

  2. LOOOOOVVVEEE IT!!!! <3
You guys have influenced and motivated me so much to be healthy and be the best person I can be…
We are so blessed to have a show/podcast like this because we, your listeners can feel the sincerity and care that you both give in informing us with all this helpful facts and tips.
Shawn, I started listening to you probably 3 weeks ago after hearing your very energetic, authentic and clear voice (may I add sexy too 🙂 in The school of Greatness show. Eversince then, I've been hooked and I had went back and listen to your very first episode and still trying to catch up. I love that you guys don't only talk about health and wellness but also being a human, being a mom, having flaws and all that… you just relate to everyone and I love you both for that!!!!! God bless to you and more power !!!

  3. Shawn and Jade,
I have been listening to this podcast for a long time and today, I went to the shawnstevensonmodel.com website for the first time! It was awesome to see the video of the two of you recording the show! It felt like I was there in the room with you. I love listening to the show and try to incorporate what I hear on the show to my daily life. My husband and kids reluctantly follow my lead! They are good sports and support my desire to live a more healthy life. Thank you to Onnit for sponsoring this wonderful show. Great job! Keep it up! Royal podcast subscriber. Mina, Tokyo, Japan

    1. Mina, I hope you know that you just made my day even better. Thank you so much for sharing that, and we’re wishing you lots of health and happiness over in Tokyo! Much more greatness to come!

    1. Hey Elena, I appreciate it so much! As for the salt, as with anything, sourcing and the integrity of the company matters most. There are fantastic salt providers, and then there are people who are out to make a buck off of a hot topic. With salt overall, you’re going to find a few compounds that are not that great for us in large consumption. As long as we’re not guzzling salt down and eating foods that are made with a lot of salt, then there’s no need to worry much. Hope that helps!
