TMHS 176: 5 Keys To An Amazing Relationship – With Anne Stevenson
There’s a wonderful quote from Carl Jung that says, “The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances: if there is any reaction, both are transformed.”
Our deepest relationships transform us. And which direction that chemical reaction goes can make all of the difference in the world. You can end up with a beautiful reaction that breathes life into everyone who’s around it, or a not-so-good reaction that can smother everyone in the room. The thing is, we don’t have to sit idly by and just hope that things will mix well together. We can actually uncover which things work great together, and put them into action for ourselves!
There will be nothing that impacts your life more than the quality of your most intimate relationship. Becoming a great “relationship chemist” will bring you more health, happiness, and success than you can even imagine.

Hi!! I’m a newbie and I’m completely obsessed with your show now! Your joy is infectious and the content you share is so educational and relevant, thank you!!! Just one question, where are the show notes? I would like to grab the notes on this episode with your wife so that I can apply the principals in my own marriage:-) You’re the best!
This episode #176 is one of my favorites to date! Your advice of “growing with the person” is one of the most important points in a relationship that I could not agree with more. In recent years I have even developed a metaphor for how couples might grow, whether it be as bushes, trees, or vines.
–People can grow as bushes: they grow into each other but not up, as in the couple becomes so infatuated with one another but they do not improve each other as beings.
–People can grow as trees: each of them is growing upward– expanding/improving oneself– with the other person, whether it be at the same or a different rate, and yet they are still two separate trees and have not combined their lives.
–And people can also grow as vines: each person starts separately but then becomes intertwined with the other person while also consistently growing up and out. Essentially, the vines represent a flourishing relationship.
Just thought I would share my reflection and admiration of this episode and maybe, just maybe, influence your thinking as well. Thank you for your endless high-quality information!
