Is Your Cookware Making You Sick?

What if you found out that the pots and pans you’ve been cooking your family’s food on has been linked to major disease and even death?  Well, that’s precisely what’s been discovered in linking numerous major sources of cookware to preventable illness.

Shortly after World War II the Du Pont company unveiled the brand new Teflon non-stick cookware to the world (much to the joy of the general public).  Now house moms and self-proclaimed chefs could cook their meals quicker, easier, and with less work than ever before.  Because the surfaces were non-stick, you could use less oil (or even no oil at all), which was key as people were beginning to fear the perceived dangers of fat.

Not only have we found out that the lipid hypothesis is utterly false (and dietary fats are critical for your health), but we’ve also discovered that Teflon gives off numerous chemicals that are devastating to the human body.  One of those substances is perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA).

In as little as 3 to 5 minutes cooking on Teflon, it begins to release at least 6 different toxic gases, including PFOA which is a known carcinogen.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) reported early on that vapors from cooking on Teflon pans at high heat caused instant death to pet birds.  In fact, there were so many reports of injury to humans and pets that this prompted several long-term studies into the potentially hazardous effects of Teflon coating.

A study of 69,000 people in West Virginia and Ohio near the Du Pont manufacturing plant yielded some shocking results.  Researchers at West Virginia University revealed the following information about the exposed residents in their findings:

  • Higher incidence of liver damage, with decreased levels of liver proteins that protect against infection
  • Higher rates of thyroid disease
  • Decreased immune system function
  • Higher cholesterol in children, predisposing them to heart disease

It’s important to note that PFOA is also associated with lowered sperm count and altered development of mammary tissue.  With all of this data coming in on the dangers of this product line, you’d think that there would have been a rush to pull it from the market… but it simply hasn’t been the case.

With little option in the way for something quick, easy, and inexpensive to prepare our food with, the industry has yet to make much progress.  In addition to the problems with Teflon, we are now aware that plastics (often used in microwaving our food) are loaded with hormone-altering substances like Bisphenol A (BPA).  Aluminum and aluminum-blended cookware is now known to contribute to brain degeneration, leading to conditions like Alzheimer’s and dementia.

The solution is a simple one once you get access to information like this.  You’ve got to THROW OUT your old Teflon non-stick pans, stop using plastic in your microwave, and upgrade the cookware that you’re preparing your families food with.

Glass cookware has been time-tested, and is excellent for baking needs.  For stovetop grilling, frying, boiling, sauteing and more, well-made ceramic is a natural choice.  Ceramic has been used for a long time, and is noted to be significantly non-toxic and excellent to cook on when you get a well designed source.  I really like this set here to cook for my family ->  Ceramic PTFE-PFOA Cadmium Free Cookware

It has a non-metallic pure ceramic cooking surface that protects food from easily burning.  It’s fun to cook with, and has a wonderful stain resistant/scratch resistant design coating that’s been shown to be 10 times stronger than conventional non-stick coating.  This means it lasts and lasts.  I’m very happy with it, and I’m 100% more confident in the safety of the food that I’m preparing for my family.

Bottom line is, if you’re going to cook, make sure that you’re not selling yourself short and using cookware that’s going to cause damage to your body and the people you care about.  Upgrade your cookware, and upgrade your family’s health.

  1. Thank you so much for the information! I just purchased a small nonstick fry pan, It is good for health ? All the posts are helpful.

  2. Cool article! I think it is also important for people with pets to remember that the cookware you use to prepare their meals might also have an impact on the animals health. Some animals are more sensitive certain materials than we as humans might be.

  3. I appreciate very much you giving me your friend number for the spring water now I ‘m drinking healthy water in my quest for vitality.LOL Now if you can help me on this prescription drug or give me a much needed lead ,My Doctor have me on this Warfarin(blood thinner) cause of A-fibilation of the heart,It has so many side effects I have been taking for almost a year now ,is there something natural I can use to combat the bad effects of this drug?

  4. Bro Shawn,

  5. Can you tell me some things that are good for the skin especially the facial area I am a dark African American(Wesley Snipes dark) did not take care of my skin In my early teen years thru my twenties. I need something that rejuvenates those inner cells of the skin to produce the vibrant skin I know is underneath my neglect ,I am in my 50’s now my skin is ok but I want it better what are some products or foods I need to tackle this inside out? Peace be with you always

    1. Great quesiton, and with Wesley complexion, it definitely takes a different approach. First of all, hydration is key, so getting the highest quality water it going to show up positively on your skin. Next is not BLOCKING the hydration with damaging, dehydrating beverages (and foods), specifically soda, low-grade coffee, pasteurized juices, etc.

Thirdly is incorporating the right kind of fats, and your skin is mostly saturated fat, but it gets clogged by low quality fats. You need fats/ oils internally and externally if you want to enhance your skin. Externally, exfoliate with something like an apricot scrub twice per week, and based on your skin type (I’d really have to see it to tell you for certain) you’d apply fresh aloe vera get OR coconut oil. You can experiment with either one and see which one resonates with you. Lastly, start juicing on a daily basis, especially recipes with cucumbers and celery, and if you don’t have a juicer, head over to the store here on the site and GET ONE! It’s one of the most powerful practices that a person can incorporate in our modern-polluted environment today. It literally floods your body with alkaline minerals enabling your genetics to start expressing themselves properly. Let me know how everything works out.

      All the best!

  6. Bro Shawn,
Peace be with you sir,I sent a comment earlier about where to find that good ole nature spring water forgot to tell you where I reside so as to get assistance on where one is located, I stay same hometown as you St. Louis in Florissant, Mo. I am ready to gear up and ride for the water all this s##%%* water need some God made water also what was that thermometer called to measure minerals in the water ,I know the ph paper but the instrument that read levels in the water ,keep doing what you do ,I know you will you are a blessing and inspriration,my genes want to do what you do.lol

    1. Leroy, thanks a million! It’s called a TDS meter (Total Disolved Solids). We posted up a local spring in Lithium, MO on this site here: There are several other springs, but because I’ve been so busy I haven’t had a chance to test them yet. A really, really good friend of mine goes to a spring on a private property for me and some of my clients every other week. It’s a couple hours away, so we devote some money to him for his efforts (it saves me SO MUCH time and it’s the only water that I have drank in the last year and a half LITERALLY). It’s the one thing that has changed me physically more than anything.

If you’d like, I can connect you up with him as well and see if he has room to fit you in a couple 5-gallon BPA free jugs of the best water in Missouri. I can’t make any guarantees that he can right now with the numer of people wanting access to this water, but I’ll definitely connect you if you’d like. Either way, I’m wishing you the best, and when I get the opportunity to go spring hunting again, I’ll definitely keep you posted.

  7. Everybody needs to post this to Facebook or any other site you can to make our friends and family aware!!! PLEASE!!

    Charley

  8. Shawn,
I, not long ago told my boyfriend about Teflon cookware a few of his co-workers have gone vegetarian, wonderful! but, they are cooking using Teflon cookware. They are firefighters so they prepare their food at work, and want less clean up. My boyfriend said, when I get my non stick cook wear, I think I will lock mine in my locker so my pans won’t get all scratched up. I told him I don’t think Teflon is safe anyhow, he says they are. Well, I will be sure to email him this article.

    Thanks, Shawn.

    1. Sophia, I’m often reminded that we don’t know what we don’t know… And the most intelligent part of us will always be able to rise to the challenge of change once we become aware of the need for it. The link that I put in the article for the pans that my family uses are actually a safe ceramic non-stick suface that hold up incredible against scratching. Thanks for being a light in other people’s lives.
