TMHS 127: Beat Inflammation, Boost Fat Loss & Recover Faster the Benefits of Cold Thermogenesis

When we think about fat burning… we think about heat; we think about sweat; we think about going all out. Sure, those things are synonymous with burning fat work, but what if there was another way?

I was absolutely floored when I dug into the research regarding the benefits of cold thermogenesis. Not only is cold a powerful catalyst for burning fat, but the clinically proven impact on hormone function, accelerated recovery, and anti-aging effects should be something that all of us are interested in.

This powerhouse episode details what I’ve learned in my research and personal experimentation over the last year. You’re going to learn how, in a strange way, our genes respond favorably to temporary cold exposure. You’re also going to learn how to take advantage of this in the least challenging, most beneficial ways. Check it out and make sure to share your thoughts and insights in the comments below. Are you hot for being cold? Click play, listen in, and let me know!

In this episode you’ll discover:

  • What “net carbs” mean and what fiber really is.
  • How contrast showers generate more “nerve force“.
  • How a Tony Robbins event sparked my interest in learning more about cryotherapy.
  • What special type of fat can actually burn body fat.
  • Where this special fat-burning fat is found on your body.
  • The 3 ways you can increase your body’s good fat to burn more bad fat.
  • What the health benefits of contrast showers are.
  • Why using cold showers to decrease libido is a myth (in fact, it might do the opposite!)
  • How whole body cryotherapy works.
  • How someone is able to eat 12,000 calories a day and still be shredded.
  • The surprising impact that cold thermogenesis has on inflammation.
  • How cryotherapy reduces pain and speeds recovery.
  • Why your body produces more powerful antioxidants than any food you can find.
  • The shocking impact that cryotherapy has on your hormones.

  1. I’m listening to your Cryotherapy episode & have a question: Would you do the contrast showers before or after a work out? Do you do the cold first or the hot? Thanks

  2. Have you ever used a Vitamin C Chlorine Shower Filter? We have one and its great!

  3. Hey Shawn
I kind of have the same question as N. I live in northern Utah so curious if this is at all beneficial. Also, does it HAVE to be a contrast shower?? I tried this the other morning and found it to be far less fun than I wanted it to be. Can’t I just sit on the couch in a big blanket and a frozen bag of peas on my back??? Ha Ha!!!! Thank you so much for all you do!!! You and Jade are amazing and truly make my commutes much more tolerable!!!

  4. I loved this episode, I just heard one from Ben Greenfield who talked about cold thermogenesis as well and it’s making me really want to jump on this band wagon. Towards the end of your podcast you mentioned working up to 2 min cold, 2 min hot. Do you have any more specifics? Do you have an idea roughly what actual temperature you are at, or just what FEELS cold? And how many cycles generally do you think to be starting to get all these amazing benefits you mentioned?
I was for a while doing 5 straight minutes and gauging the temperature with a meat thermometer and trying to withstand between 50-60 degrees Farenheit. Any insight you could give would be appreciated, I’m new to the podcast but loving it so far!

  5. Very interesting information. Every summer when we swim at my parents, my husband goes back and forth between the pool and the hot tub. I always thought he was crazy, but I guess he was on to something! Thanks for sharing!

  6. Great podcast as always.I used to do the contrast showers religiously. But got away from.I got the idea years ago from Charles Staley’s book.Does this boost your immune system? Thanks for the great info.Peace

  7. Sean, for those of us who do not have access to a cabin like this, is a sauna or a steambath a compromise? I can´t even do saunas as I am extemely metabolically deranged and won´t sweat inside one. I love steambaths though, I notice I get much less ill (I have several autimmune issues and used to be ill all winter)and my skin feels amazing”

  8. Shawn – This was a truly fascinating episode and something I was super curious about after listening to Tim Ferris interview the world record holder, “Iceman” Wim Hof.

I have a follow-up question that may seem a bit silly but I hope you’ll indulge me. Can the beneficial effects seen from ice baths, contrast showers or even cryotherapy (something I don’t have access to), be achieved through sensible exposure to cold temperatures during the winter months for those of us that live up north? Is there research that addresses this question?

  9. This episode was SO fascinating to listen to. I haven’t missed an episode yet but this might be a favorite. Off to try a contrast shower! Thank you Shawn~

    1. Wow, thank you so much! That means a lot to me. Much, much more good stuff to come 😉
